Campaign manager shot dead in Sto. Tomas, Batangas

MANILA, Philippines - The campaign manager of a candidate for mayor of Sto. Tomas town in Batangas was shot dead along the Maharlika Highway on Tuesday.

A report on The Filipino Connection identified the victim as Mario Rivera, 63, of Barangay San Pablo. According to police, Rivera was standing outside a supermarket when a gunman dressed in a white long-sleeved shirt shot him in the head.

The shooter left the scene in a yellow vehicle that drove off in the direction of Calamba, Laguna, the report said.

Rivera was brought to St. Frances Cabrini Medical Center in Sto. Tomas but died while being treated.

Police are still trying to determine the motive behind the killing.

A barangay chairperson in Mataas Na Kahoy town was killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen in March. The Batangas provincial police classified that death as election related, the first in the province since 2010.
