PAGASA: LPA to bring rains on Sunday

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday warned the public of expected rains in most parts of the country due to a low pressure area (LPA), formerly tropical depression “Onyok.”

 

PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said the LPA located 170 kilometers east-northeast of Zamboanga City at 4 a.m. is affecting Mindanao. However, it is expected to dissipate within the day.

 

The weather bureau said aside from the LPA, two other weather systems, northeast monsoon or “hanging amihan” and tail-end of a cold front, are also affecting the country on Sunday, triggering rains.

 

The northeast monsoon is affecting Northern and Central Luzon, while a tail-end of a cold front is affecting Southern Luzon.

 

According to Aurelio, the three weather systems will bring cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms, may possibly cause flash floods and landslides over SOCCSKSARGEN, Bicol Region, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and the Provinces of Aurora and Maguindanao while Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience cloudy skies with light rains.

 

On the other hand, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

 

PAGASA also issued gale warning due to the effects of northeast monsoon that causes rough to very rough sea condition due to strong to gale force winds. It is expected to affect the northern, eastern and western seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of the Visayas.

 

"Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," PAGASA said.

 

Despite forecasted rain for the most parts of country on Sunday, Aurelio said there are no weather disturbances seen near the Philippine Area of Responsibility over the next three days.

 

Aurelio said the rest of the country will have an improved weather condition with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rains or thunderstorms.

 

Northern Luzon is anticipated to have moderate to strong winds while the rest of the country is foreseen to have light to moderate winds within the week.
