MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday urged authorities to file charges against a motorist who supposedly tried to overtake the convoy of President Aquino last week.
In a statement from his office, Binay said appropriate charges should be filed against sports car driver Jeffrey Roxas-Chua for endangering the safety of Aquino.
"The Vice President feels strongly that Roxas-Chua did not only violate traffic laws. This motorist put at risk the safety and security of the President and the members of his official family. His reckless actions should not be condoned or allowed to go unpunished," Binay said in the statement.
According to reports, a policeman who flagged down Roxas-Chua issued him a ticket for reckless driving along the Skyway after overtaking several vehicles of Aquino's convoy, which included the car of the President himself.
When he learned that it was the presidential convoy, Roxas-Chua reportedly named-dropped Binay and Manila City Mayor Joseph Estrada.
But in his statement, Binay reiterated that he does not know the reported erring motorist.
Motoring magazine Top Gear reported last week that Roxas-Chua denied the allegations against him.
"Whatever the media said that I said, is truly false. Have hard evidence to prove it (video). It's actually a very juicy video. I'm not the type to name-drop people I do not know," Roxas-Chua was quoted as saying in an article on the website of Top Gear.
The incident reportedly happened when Aquino was on his way to inspect the terminals and air and sea ports in Metro Manila for the Holy Week exodus.
