Makati job fair offers 5,600 jobs

MANILA, Philippines - A job fair by the Makati Public Employment Service Office (PESO) on Friday will be offering some 5,600 job vacancies to jobseekers both from Makati and from other parts of Metro Manila.

Makati PESO manager and City Personnel Officer Vissia Marie Aldon said the job fair will be held from 8am to 4pm at the Bonifacio Monument in the Makati Park and Garden located along J.P. Rizal Extension in Brgy. West Rembo.

Aldon encouraged male and female jobseekers from Makati and other parts of Metro Manila to come to the job fair, which has over 60 participating companies confirmed to date.

Aldon said the job fair, themed 'Makati-PESO, Kabalikat at Gabay sa Disente at Matatag na Paghahanap-buhay,' is part of a series of events commemorating the birthdays of Dr. Elenita Binay on Nov. 9 and Vice President Jejomar Binay on Nov. 11, both former mayors of Makati.

“The mega job fair in November has become part of tradition in Makati to honor the city’s past leaders who have been firm advocates of the right of every citizen to equal access to employment and livelihood opportunities,” Aldon said.

Speaking on behalf of Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay, Aldon thanked the Rotary Club of Makati District 3830 and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for having supported the event every year.

Among the companies to directly hire at the job fair are Rustan’s Supermarket, SM Department Store & Hypermart, Family Mart, ABS-CBN Film Production, Celine, Forever 21, Gingersnaps, Goldilocks, Japan Home Center, Andok’s, and many more.

Participating agencies include Ablebodies Manpower, Aimstaff, Citiworks Manpower, Direct Sales Support, Reliable Work Force, SL Temps, and Mirof Resources, among others.

Meanwhile, Aldon was elected as President of PESO Phil., Inc. (PESOPHIL) during the 13th National PESO Congress in Palo, Leyte last September. In her acceptance speech, she laid out her priority goals and programs for her three-year term.

Aldon has vowed to focus on ensuring the financial viability of PESOPHIL, enhancing the role of PESO managers in helping local chief executives realize employment targets and promote sustainable development, adapting the principle of transparency, and institutionalizing PESO.

Aldon said it was important to professionalize the ranks of PESO managers in the country to optimize their contributions to growth and development at the local and national levels.

To achieve this, she said PESOPHIL needs to strengthen networking with international organizations that could give scholarship grants for the professional development of PESO managers, and also extend financial assistance for its projects. It was also important to make attendance to trainings and seminars conducted by DOLE mandatory for PESO managers, she said.

On transparency, the new PESOPHIL president said she will undertake the creation of PESOPHIL webpage to be administered by PESO Makati, which will serve as a virtual newsletter containing important data, including updated financial report, minutes and notices of meetings. Aldon said she will also push for the creation of a database or national directory of all PESO managers in the country.

Aldon is currently serving her second term as regional president of the PESO Association of Metro Manila, in which she was elected in September 2010 and August this year.

Under her watch since 2007, Makati PESO has earned and maintained its status as the Best PESO in the Phil-Jobnet Category of DOLE, having consistently posted the highest number of registered online job applicants for at least five years now.

Aside from mega job fairs done at least twice a year, Makati PESO also has a regular job placement program in its office at the 5th floor during weekdays, providing assistance to jobseekers and employers through referrals or recommendations. It also implements an emergency employment program called Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para sa Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD); summer programs for students and out-of-school youths - Social Program for Employment of Students (SPES) and Government Internship Program (GIP); and livelihood programs through the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP).

Through the academe, PESO also offers Career Guidance for High School students; Labor Education for Graduating College Students (LEGS); and skills training through the Makati Training, Placement and Livelihood Consortia (MTPLC), which offers free tech-vocational courses for city residents at the University of Makati.
