PNP plans daytime checkpoints in NCR

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police is considering putting up daytime checkpoints in Metro Manila in an effort to curb criminal activities.

PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima on Thursday said the checkpoints  will help the police in intercepting criminal gangs.

Purisima added that he would discuss the plan with Metro Manila police chief Director Leonardo Espina. The PNP is implementing the Commission on Elections chekcpoints normally set up at night.

Purisima, however, said they would have to consider other issues in setting up daytime checkpoints such as the possibility of worsening morning rush-hour traffic.

The PNP chief's statement came in the wake of a number of crimes in Metro Manila, including the robbery of a jewelry store at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City; the murder of a businessman in San Juan City; robbery at money transfer outlet in Parañaque City; and break-in at a pawnshop in Valenzuela City.
