MMD takes control in 'Makatanong'
Miss Universe Philippines 2023 Michelle Marquez Dee, aka MMD, unveils a bold new chapter in her music journey with the R&B track "Makatanong."
MMD wrote the song that contrasts with her previous release, her debut single "Reyna."
While "Reyna" was a catchy dance tune, "Makatanong" highlights an empowered woman reclaiming her voice and taking control of her narrative.
Last year, MMD made her debut as a recording artist with her first single “Reyna” released under the groundbreaking partnership of ABS-CBN Music and GMA. “Reyna” was also featured in several episodes of “Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition” during the Sparkle artist’s stint as a house guest.

Revival King does classic
Jojo Mendrez, known as “The Revival King,” breathes new life into the beloved Filipino classic “Yakap,” originally popularized by Junior in 1979.
With his signature style, Mendrez delivers a heartfelt and contemporary interpretation that reintroduces the timeless song to a new generation of listeners.
“It is a dream song for me,” Mendrez shared. “Star Music selected the track during one of our meetings and said it suited me perfectly. I also expressed my wish to have Jonathan Manalo arrange it — and they made it happen.”
Among Mendrez's remakes is “Tuyo Na’ng Damdamin” by the Apo Hiking Society, which he was among the first to reinterpret and previously performed on "Eat Bulaga." He has also reimagined several classics, including “Magkabilang Mundo” (originally by Jireh Lim), “Sana,” and “Handog” by Florante — his version of the latter earning Revival Song of the Year honors at the 11th Star Awards for Music by PMPC.
His memorable rendition of “Somewhere in My Past,” originally performed by Julie Vega and composed by Mon del Rosario, remains one of his standout performances, going viral with over 50 million views on social media. Expanding his repertoire further, Mendrez has also revived the international hit “Valentine” by Jim Brickman.
He is set to release another remake, “Boy,” originally by Timmy Cruz and composed by Mon del Rosario. Also in the works are his interpretations of “Bakit Ba Ganyan” (Dina Bonnevie), “Tamis ng Unang Halik” (Tina Paner), and “Pangako” by Kindred Garden.
In addition to revivals, Mendrez continues to record original music. His releases include “Basta Ikaw,” composed and arranged by the late Andrei Dionisio, as well as “Diwa ng Pasko,” “Kahit Sandali,” and “Mula Nang Mawala’y Sayo.” He also penned “Minahal Kita,” featured in his debut album “Inspirasyon," distributed by Ivory Records.
Mendrez also expressed gratitude to Star Music for supporting his original songs, including “Nandito Lang Ako” and his hit “Ngayong Pasko’y Ikaw Pa Rin,” both written by Jonathan Manalo.
“Yakap,” arranged by Tommy Katigbak produced by Jonathan Manalo and released under Star Music, is now available on all major digital streaming platforms.
Kim Perez soothes soul with new single
Sparkle artist Kim Perez released his latest single under GMA Playlist, “‘Wag Nang Mangamba.”
The singer shared that writing his latest single is akin to the preparations done by an actor. “As an actor, you have to show and let the audience feel the emotions you are giving. As a singer, internalizing the lyrics is my priority because I want to deliver every line with the kind of sincerity that listeners can truly feel.”
Kim is thankful for the creative freedom given to him to explore his new sound. He hopes the track serves as a gentle reminder for the listeners to pause, breathe, and find peace amidst their restless thoughts. He also expressed his interest in exploring other genres such as hip-hop and rap during his singing career.
“‘Wag Nang Mangamba” is now available on major streaming platforms worldwide.
