'First Light' starring Ruby Ruiz, Maricel Soriano to hit cinemas in June

MANILA, Philippines — "First Light," a slow-burn crime drama starring Ruby Ruiz, Maricel Soriano, and Rez Cortez, with Kidlat Tahimik and Kare Adea, returns home to the Philippines after making the rounds in several film festivals
Written and directed by James J. Robinson, its homecoming — hitting cinemas nationwide beginning June 24 —marks the beginning of a wider movement, where cinema becomes a space for dialogue, accountability and change.
The Australian-Filipino co-production arrives as the anchor of an ambitious impact campaign that transforms storytelling into tangible environmental action.
Led by Clou Media Productions in collaboration with sustainability non-profit organization, Sustina, the initiative moves beyond the screen and into the very landscapes that shaped the film.
Partly filmed in Baras, Rizal, "First Light" is inseparable from its setting. It is here that Masungi Georeserve stands, now at the center of the campaign, creating a full-circle moment where cinema gives back to the land that once held it.
Block screenings for the movie contribute directly to watershed protection efforts, turning each viewing into an act of preservation.
At its core, "First Light" is a meditation on decolonization, identity, land, and community. It asks what it means to return, to remember, and to take responsibility.
