New 'Moana' trailer debuts Dwayne Johnson as live-action Maui

MANILA, Philippines — Disney dropped a full-length trailer for its live-action remake of "Moana," giving a better look at Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the shape-shifting demigod Maui.
The new trailer begins with an excerpt of "I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors)" over clips of the titular character portrayed by Catherine Laga'aia in her film debut.
Rena Owen's Gramma Tala tasks Moana, as one chosen by the ocean, with finding Maui to aid her in restoring the heart of nature goddess Te Fiti before a looming darkness takes over the seas.
Momentum builds up to the scene where Moana meets Maui, introducing himself as "Maui, shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, and hero of men... and women too!"
The trailer shifts to action sequeneces while playing an excerpt of "How Far I'll Go," plus the humorous exchange of whether Moana qualifies as a princess.
"My island, my people won't survive if we don't make it. The ocean chose me for a reason, and it chose you too," Moana tells Maui.
Closing the trailer is a clip of Moana caught by surprise as Maui tries to shift into a hammerhead shark but only manages his upper half.
Also confirmed to be in the cast are John Tui and Frankie Adams as Moana's parents Chief Tui and Sina (the latter previously voiced by Filipino-American artist Nicole Scherzinger).
Thomas Kail, a Tony-winning director of several stage productions including "Hamilton," makes his directorial while original screenwriter Jared Bush returns with the help of "Moana 2" co-director Dana Ledoux Miller, having worked on the 2024 sequel together.
The live-action "Moana" will premiere in Philippine cinemas on July 8, nearly ten years before the original came out. — Video from Disney's YouTube channel
