Retired cop gunned down in Malabon

MANILA, Philippines - A Manila police officer who retired from service last year was shot dead by unidentified gunmen while walking home in Malabon City Saturday night.

Henriquito Vergara, 57, who held the rank of Senior Police Officer 3, died of multiple gunshot wounds in the head and body while on the way to the Malabon City community hospital.

PO2 Patrick Alvarado said Vergara, a resident of Barangay San Agustin, was walking with a girl when he was waylaid by at least two men, armed with .45 caliber pistols, along Magsaysay street near his home at around 9:15 p.m.

After the shooting, the gunmen escaped on foot towards Rizal Avenue Extension.

The Malabon City police are clueless on the motive for killing Vergara, the third person shot in Malabon City in two days.

On June 2, Marco Ameliana and his unidentified cohort reportedly shot dead fried chicken vendor Jose Maliwat, 25, in the victim’s house in Barangay Catmon at around 7:15 p.m.

At about 7 a.m. on the same day, Cher Transport bus driver Renato Quejaro, 47, was shot by a passenger while turning a corner at Araneta and Gov. Pascual Avenues in Barangay Potrero. The gunman, armed with a .45 caliber pistol, fled on foot and remains unidentified.
