Defective gun costs guard’s life

A security guard was killed when his service firearm jammed as he responded to an ongoing robbery at a gas station at dawn yesterday.

William Manguray died while undergoing treatment for two bullet wounds in the head at the Ospital ng Maynila.

Senior Police Officer 2 Richard Lumbad said that at around 5:30 a.m., six armed men riding in tandem on three motorcycles robbed the Metro Gas station at the corner of Quirino Avenue and Pedro Gil street in Pandacan.

Manguray noticed the commotion and tried to fire at the suspects. However, his caliber .38 pistol failed to fire despite his repeated attempts. One of the suspects shot him in the head. As he lay on the ground, another robber shot him and took his firearm.

Lumbad said the suspects took away P5,000 from the gas station and the cashier’s cell phone.

He said there have been reports that some security agencies provide their guards with defective firearms. – Nestor Etolle
