Ospital ng Maynila bags int’l award

The city-owned Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center (OSMA) has gained international recognition for winning the Human Resource and Development category of the Asian Hospital Management Awards for 2004.

It is the first government hospital to win the award.

The award for outstanding achievement for OSMA’s Knowledge Management System was received by Dr. Reynaldo Joson and Dr. Christia Padolina, head of the Department of Surgery and OSMA director, respectively, at the Gala Awards Dinner held at the Plaza Athenee Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.

OSMA’s system was chosen from a field of 165 programs from 55 hospitals in 11 countries.

Manila Mayor Lito Atienza said the award only shows that the city government efforts to support the hospital and his own personal prodding for the administrators and health personnel to improve the delivery of health services is paying off.

Atienza also cited the health personnel for rising to the challenge to become innovative in the face of limited resources to provide quality care for patients.

Some 300 hospital managers from all over Asia attended the event sponsored by the Asian Hospital Federation, the International Hospital Federation, the Faber Medi-Serv Group and the Joint Commission International.

"This award is a testament to the competence and creativity of health personnel of the OSMA," the mayor said.

The Knowledge Management System involves codifying, storing and transferring of knowledge and has three components — the internal communication system, the data/information management system and the learning management system.
