CEBU, Philippines - A former seaman reportedly committed suicide after stabbing his wife during a fight inside their house in sitio Kalamabuan, barangay Kamputhaw at past 10 am yesterday.

Antonio Abaigar, 43, was found dead on the floor with blood in his hands.

His wife was identified as Josefa Abaigar, 45.

Investigation showed that Antonio, who had been living separately from his wife since late last year, went to Josefa’s house and confronted her about the rumor that she was having an affair with another man.

Josefa, who was then doing laundry, proceeded upstairs afraid that her husband might attack her with the weapon she saw tucked in his waist.

Antonio followed her to the second floor of the house and stabbed her with an improvised umbrella handle, hitting her in the stomach and on her face.

She also sustained cuts on her hands, said PO1 Nilo Aventurado.

The woman managed to break free from her husband and sought assistance from neighbors.

Police arrived and saw the man lying on the floor. Paramedics declared him dead.

Apart from a cut on Antonio’s hand, Aventurado said there were no other injuries found on Antonio’s body that would suggest he was attacked.

“Pagtuo sa asawa nga miutong to siya,” said Aventurado.

Josefa, a promodiser, disclosed to the police that her husband maltreated her, prompting her to live separately from him.

She said she filed a case for violence against women against the man, but later on filed a case of desistance. The man was reportedly suffering from drug addiction.

The woman is now recuperating at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.  (FREEMAN)
