Youth can help propel ecological advocacy

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The youths are expected to take a big part in this year’s Earth Hour celebration as experts believe that the youth can do much in propelling environmental advocacy forward.

Roxanne Hernaez, Young Minds Academy (YMA) 5 scholar of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), dwelt on the fact that battling the effects of climate change and global warming is a task not only for government and experts but also for the general public.

“Youth can spark action anytime and anywhere. We don’t need to wait for the annual celebration of Earth Hour,” Hernaez said.

Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez will lead tonight in switching off lights.

A pre-program will be held this evening from 7:00 to 7:10 p.m. and from 7:10 to 8:00 p.m. a film will be shown while waiting for city employees and other groups that will walk from the Santo Niño Church in barangay Mohon to a park in barangay Poblacion.

At around 8:00-8:25 p.m. the ringing of bells of Santa Teresa de Avila Parish and the sounding of sirens of fire trucks of city fire department will begin.

An ecumenical prayer will be led by Father Vic Ampalayo of the Santo Niño Parish in Mohon.

This year’s Earth Hour carries the theme “Switch off for good. Switch on to renewable energy.”

Cities and countries worldwide will switch off their lights for an hour.  (FREEMAN)
