Congress approves Quisumbing bill

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - A bill filed by sixth district Rep. Gabriel Luis Quisumbing known as the "Conversion of the Cordova Public College into Cordova State College," was approved Tuesday in Congress.

Quisumbing, in a press statement, said he filed HB 1922 now HB 4265 or the bill converting Cordova Public College into Cordova State College because of the belief that many poverty-stricken residents of Cordova town could not afford to give their children a college degree due to the high cost of education especially in the private universities and colleges in Cebu City and Mandaue City.

Aside from the high cost of obtaining a college degree, parents are also dealt with the problem of the high cost of transportation, personal sustenance, and other necessary expenses especially if their children attend private schools.

Quisumbing said his office is now coordinating with the Senate specifically with Senator Edgardo Angara, chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture, to pass a counterpart measure to realize its enactment into a law.

Once it becomes a law, it will pave the way for quality but affordable advanced instruction and professional training in engineering, industrial technologies, business, arts and sciences. — THE FREEMAN
