Tales of consumption

MANILA, Philippines - Ad-man-turned-artist Dex Fernandez is the man responsible for this month’s edition of the YStyle logo, a comic macabre visual parable on the sins of consumption.

Fernandez, a fine arts grad from the Technological University of the Philippines, is a noted fan of low-brow art — tattoos, posters, graffiti. Having made his name as a master of the mixed media collage, his convoluted spins on innocence and cynicism court taboo material, just like his series of abstract configurations of soft-core images made almost indecipherable.

“Art is porn, and porn is art,” Fernandez has said of the series.

Fernandez’s revealing portrait on consumerism is a season-appropriate message for the holiday-mad month of November.
