Manila, Philippines - The “Grammar of Movement” series, a wood sculpture exhibit by Juan Carlo Calma, is an exploration in temporality through layering and gradation. The sculptures are divided into sections and encapsulate various types of trajectory and memory expressed in the activity of dance - there is, after all, nothing more universal than the rhythm to which a dancer adheres. Dance has been known throughout history to evoke a string of emotions from both the performer and the spectator, as it is perhaps the most obvious form of movement. Calma’s “Grammar of Movement” centers on the elegance of classic ballet and the rawness of urban hip-hop, using various techniques in gradation and color to map the speed of the movement. The abstract is also expressed in the exhibit, critiquing the “jejemon” pop culture and its idiosyncrasies, creating a paradox in the cultural movement.
There are 18 pieces in the “Grammar of Movement” exhibit. The opening is today, April 29, 6 p.m. at the Main Lobby of Ayala Museum, which is a private event. After opening night, all of the works will be moved to Artist Space, second floor, Glass Wing of Ayala Museum for two weeks only. Gallery hours are weekdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
