Railroad Rock

MANILA, Philippines - This Sunday, Dec. 12, over 80 performers will hold eight simultaneous events at eight MRT stations along EDSA. It’s Rock Ed Philippines’ fifth edition of “Rock the Riles,” an annual celebration of International Human Rights Day.

Noel Cabangon, Sugarfree, Imago, Chicosci, Radioactive Sago Project, Stonefree, Peryodiko, Ciudad, and Up Dharma Down lead this year’s gathering, urging Filipinos to use the UN’s eight Millennium Development Goals as a roadmap for progress.

The performances will take place between 12 noon and 7 p.m. at select MRT stations. “Rock the Riles” has a corresponding cause for each stop—Shaw Station for HIV/AIDS, Cubao for the environment, Ayala for global partnership, Taft against hunger, Boni for maternal health, Quezon Avenue for basic education, Buendia for gender equality, North Avenue against child mortality.

Rock Ed is a countrywide volunteer group that finds fun ways to make Filipinos interested in nation-building. It was founded in 2005 by Gang Badoy, who is an educator, journalist, and one of this year’s Ten Outstanding Women of Service awardees. Diokno took the helm of Rock Ed this month.
