Tips on how to keep baby dry

MANILA, Philippines - Pampers, the diaper brand committed to baby development, and its partner, the Mother and Child Nurses Association of the Philippines (MCNAP), have teamed up to give a talk to parents on how they can keep their baby’s skin healthy and prevent diaper rash.

Diaper rash, MCNAP explains, is a result of skin irritation due to moisture in the nappy area, caused by pH changes that occur when stools and urine combine.

Keeping baby’s bottom dry and clean, they advise, are the best ways to prevent diaper rash. Make sure to change your baby’s diaper after they become wet or soiled or look for an extra-absorbent diaper that helps pull urine away from your baby’s skin and stool.

If it’s only wet, you can rediaper immediately without cleansing or gently wipe your baby clean with a wipe or warm washcloth before diapering.

If your baby has soiled his diaper, wipe his bottom clean with a gentle alcohol-free baby wipe or warm washcloth and gently pat him dry. Always wipe from front to back to prevent the introduction of bacteria into the urinary tract.

Then spread a thin layer of zinc oxide cream or petroleum jelly over your baby’s bottom as extra protection against wetness, or try a diaper that includes skin-friendly ingredients to have the same effect. Avoid using baby powder — it doesn’t help prevent or treat diaper rash and may be harmful if your baby inhales it.

When putting on a fresh diaper, don’t secure it too tightly to allow some air to circulate.

To simulate the pressure diapers are put under when babies sit on them or when they suddenly fall on their bottoms while they’re learning to walk, Pampers brand manager Chad Sotelo placed tissue paper on top of both diapers and asked parents to press down hard.

Throughout the many demonstrations carried out that day, Pampers Active Baby was the only diaper which not only absorbed the water poured on it faster, it was also the only diaper whose piece of tissue stayed completely dry — just like your baby’s bottom.

This is because Pampers Active Baby has an extra locking layer that seals away wetness, so that it stays dry even under pressure. And it even has a soft, cotton-like outer cover with great breathability and a hypoallergenic lotion with aloe vera extract to help protect your baby’s skin and further reduce the risk of diaper rash.

Pampers Active Baby is available in major supermarkets nationwide. For more information about Pampers Active Baby, visit www.pampers.ph.
