Happy birthday 'Toyo'

MANILA, Philippines - A big part of the Filipino diet is sardine. Probably unknown to many, the common sardine in tomato sauce, such as Toyo Sardines, has a nutritional value that is equivalent to a complete meal. The tomato sauce alone is packed with a hefty serving of vitamin C, vitamin A, B-complex vitamins, and cancer-fighting lycopene. The sardine fish, a group of several types of small oily fish related to herrings, completes the meal with its high protein, iodine, calcium, omega 3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, and a host of other vitamins and minerals.

Toyo sardines are a versatile ingredient for pasta or omelette, and can be a substitute for meat in some dishes. They can also serve as spread on crackers, biscuits, and pandesal.
