Sonny Locsin rocks as Mabini

Ballet Philippines celebrated Apolinario Mabini’s 150th birthday with its innovative La Revolucion Filipina, a modern dance masterpiece choreographed by Agnes Locsin with libretto by Dennis Marasigan and music by Ryan Cayabyab, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Each performance was marked with overwhelming standing ovations.

Apolinario Mabini was portrayed by Philippine-born and Germany-based guest artist Sonny Locsin in gala performances, and by Ballet Philippines principal dancer Jean Marc Cordero during matinees. Playing opposite them — as Emilio Aguinaldo — were principal dancer Richardson Yadao and Tanghalang Pilipino scholar Ricardo Magno, respectively. The clear message imparted was that everyday citizens can be heroes when it comes to loving and fighting for one’s country.

As Ballet Philippines celebrates its 45th anniversary, we look forward to more events under the artistic direction of Paul Alexander Morales and Margie Moran Floirendo’s presidency.  This dance company recently bagged 10 awards from Gawad Buhay for their outstanding perfromances in female and male leading roles, to their ensemble and  choreography productions.
