It’s toe bad she can’t wear open sandals

Dear Tingting,

I’m 43 years old and I have a problem with my toenails. Since childhood, my big toenails look like they’ve been split in the middle and now, I can see my other toenails getting the same problem. I put nail hardener and I’m taking some multivitamins, but I see no improvement. I’m getting desperate because I can’t wear open sandals.

Is the split in the middle of your big toenails due to trauma? If so, check your shoes. They’re probably tight. Don’t wear ill-fitting closed shoes. Maybe your nails are brittle. Ask your doctor if you can take Biocil vitamins. If you have a fungal infection, see a doctor who will recommend an oral or topical medicine.

Beauty And The Bleach
Dear Mary,

I really have a nice pair of legs, except for the black/dark spots on them caused by insect bites that make my legs look dirty. Is there a cream that’s been proven effective in lightening dark spots on skin? It’s summer and the swimming season is just around the corner – and I want to flaunt my legs but can’t!

Dr. Sylvia Jacinto (tel. no. 894-3952) prescribes an over-the-counter cream called Active Brilliant by VMV Hypoallergenics. But still the most effective treatment for dark/black spots is Triluma, a hydroquinone-based cream that is available by prescription from your dermatologist. Try Palmer’s Coco Butter Scar Serum, available at Rustan’s Essenses. It really works!

Coffee, Tea Or Water
Dear Mary,

I really admire your column as you help so many readers who wish to go on a diet to improve their looks and health. I just want to ask what I can use as a replacement for coffee or tea for the 3-day diet as I’m not a coffee/tea drinker.

Zarah Jane Balat

A glass or cup of water will do. I wish you luck on your diet.
