Ben Pimentel's guerilla novel wins Juan C. Laya Award

Mga Gerilya sa Powell Street, a book written by noted journalist Benjamin Pimentel and published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, was awarded the Juan C. Laya Award for Fiction (highest award in the said category) in The National Book Award.  The novel is brought to life in theater with Tanghalang Pilipino, which is currently being staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Tanghalang Huseng Batute until Nov. 30.

Mga Gerilya sa Powell Street is a funny and heartrending story about Filipino veterans Fidel, Ciriaco, Ruben, Badong, and Major Amor who fought for the country’s freedom during the World War II in their youthful years. Now that they are old and gray, they have risked their lives once more for another mission across the seas. Pimentel tells their stories in this poignant novel set in the cold streets and apartment buildings of San Francisco. The play stars Tommy Abuel, Bembol Roco, Dido De La Paz, Lou Veloso, and other respected thespians.
