MANILA, Philippines — Mayon Volcano in Albay discharged lava that flowed toward the gullies of Basud, Bonga and Mi-isi yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

In its advisory, Phivolcs said a lava effusion with a collapse-fed pyroclastic density current was recorded between 6:31 a.m. and 6:46 a.m., marking the volcano’s 189th consecutive day of effusive eruption.

Episodic minor strombolian activity was observed at Mayon, with moderate plumes rising 750 meters above the crater and drifting northeast.

On Saturday, state volcanologists said sulfur emissions at Mayon reached their highest in 26 years, at 13,128 tons.

“There are new possibilities that the behavior of ongoing eruption could change and even lead to explosive eruption,” Phivolcs said.

Alert Level 3 prevails over Mayon. Entry into the six-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is prohibited.
