MANILA, Philippines — A motorcycle taxi rider died on Saturday, April 18, during a cash aid distribution in Quezon City.

According to reports, the rider passed away at the fuel subsidy distribution at Quezon City Circle on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian ordered the agency’s NCR Field Office to coordinate with the motorcycle taxi rider’s family and employer, as well as the hospital where he was brought.

The agency also said that Gatchalian personally met the family at the hospital on the morning of Sunday, April 19, and assured them of DSWD assistance.

The DSWD provided a support package covering medical bills, funeral and interment costs, family travel expenses, and educational assistance for the deceased rider’s daughter.

The agency held a special payout on Saturday at the Quezon Memorial Circle, providing P5,000 in cash aid to transport and delivery riders affected by rising fuel costs linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Despite a price rollback last week, oil prices remain more than P120 per liter.

In a video message on Saturday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said another round of oil prices rollbacks is expected this week.
