Probe into NAIA ceiling collapse sought
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Raffy Tulfo has called for an investigation into the reported collapse of a portion of the ceiling at NAIA Terminal 1 on April 3, which left seven people injured.
Tulfo, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Public Services, said on Facebook that he has coordinated with Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez to check on the condition of the victims.
According to Lopez, the Emergency Response Team of the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) quickly responded to the incident.
The seven injured individuals, who were at the arrival area to fetch passengers, were immediately attended to, with those needing further care being brought to hospitals.
The NNIC has shouldered the victims’ medical expenses, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said, though it is still awaiting a complete report on where the injured were taken and the extent of their injuries.
“Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident. NNIC is working closely with the relevant authorities and will take the necessary action based on the findings,” it said.
“NNIC continues to provide all necessary assistance to those involved. The safety and well-being of passengers, airport workers and visitors remain its top priority,” it added.
One of the victims sustained a forehead injury and was transferred to Makati Medical Center while the others are now in stable condition.
Tulfo said swift action is needed to ensure public safety and proper aid for victims.
While NAIA Terminal 1 has resumed normal operations, Tulfo urged the DOTr and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to remain proactive and ensure that airport facilities comply with safety standards.
Lopez said an investigation is ongoing and updates will be given once available.
