DPWH urged to resume flood control projects in Albay
MANILA, Philippines — A lawmaker urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to reconsider its nationwide ban on flood control projects, saying some areas are in urgent need of such measures.
Albay 3rd district Rep. Raymond Adrian Salceda lamented that “because of the national ban on flood control projects, many structures that were damaged by Typhoon Kristine (in October 2024) remain unrepaired.”
Salceda said temporary sandbagging operations were done in order to delay flooding during the onslaught of Typhoon Uwan and complete their evacuation efforts.
“Eventually, the sandbags gave way. We therefore appeal to the DPWH to prioritize appropriate, scientific and evidence-based flood control projects for the district,” Salceda said.
“At least 25,000 families were evacuated, and this number could be higher pending validation with the respective local government units,” the lawmaker noted.
Salceda said one fatality was recorded in Libon town as a result of the typhoon.
