Padilla pushes 'Anti-Pabebe' bill in Senate

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Robin Padilla filed the “Anti-Pabebe” bill, which seeks the addition of more practical skills in the education curriculum.
The bill also wants to introduce environmental awareness and values formation into the education system.
“To ensure that the life skills are embedded properly, the curriculum developed under this Act shall incorporate mandatory hands-on activities and practical demonstrations across grade levels,” the bill stated.
Some of the activities listed in the bill include basic agriculture and gardening, sewing, basic cooking, household skills, carpentry and woodwork.
In Padilla’s explanatory note, changing cultures and technology have made traditional means of passing on these life skills from generation to generation difficult.
“This proposed measure seeks to institutionalize these essential skills within the Philippine curriculum. It aligns with global best practices which show that systematic life skills education, combined with values formation and environmental awareness, strengthens psychological and social competence, enhances mental well-being, reduces behavioral risks, and fosters responsible citizenship among the Filipino youth,” Padilla said.
The senator did not explain in his note why he named the bill “Anti-Pabebe”.
"Pabebe" is a slang term for someone acting in an exaggerated or insincere way.
The bill was filed on August 27 and was referred to the Committee on Basic Education and Committee on Finance on September 16.
