MANILA, Philippines — The Senate is setting its sights on a mid-2027 start for the long-awaited relocation to the New Senate Building (NSB) in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, who chairs the Senate committee on accounts overseeing the project, said this was the updated timeline based on the ongoing construction of the Senate’s new home.

“That’s the target. We’re really trying for the middle of 2027,” Cayetano said.

The transfer is expected to span six months to a year because of logistical challenges, he added.

The NSB was originally slated for completion in 2021.

It will replace the Senate’s current home at a rented Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) building in Pasay City.

However, a change in Senate leadership from Juan Miguel Zubiri to Francis Escudero caused a change in committee chairmanship, and the new accounts chair Cayetano investigated the building’s ballooning cost that caused a word war – and an ethics dispute – between him and former accounts chair Nancy Binay.

Cayetano said he is reviewing the lease agreement with GSIS to ensure a smooth handover. He is also preparing a technical report on the project for release soon.
