LRT-2, MRT-3 to offer free rides to women this March 8
MANILA, Philippines — The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) are set to offer Filipinas free rides on Friday, March 8, in celebration of the International Women's Day.
The government-ran LRT-2 and privately-owned MRT-3 made the statement last Wednesday. Said "libreng sakay" will be available on both lines from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow.
"Our free rides for women is the [Light Rail Transit Authority's] way of saying thank you to their undeniable contributions to our society," said LRTA administrator Hernando Cabrera in Filipino yesterday.
"We hope that our simple gesture could make you feel that you're important to us."
For her part, Transportation Assistant Secretary for Railways and MRT-3 Officer-in-Charge Jorjette Aquino said that the limited offering is meant to acknowledge the essential role that women serve in Philippine society.
Aquino said that women serve as valuable players in bringing progress in the Philippines as a whole.
"In the MRT-3 alone, there are our ticket sellers, security personnel station supervisors and other ordinary women that ensure the orderly and safe trip of our passengers," she said.
"It's only fitting that we pay tribute and support our women especially on their special day."
On the other hand, there's still no word from LRT-1 and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) if they would offer the same free rides for tomorrow.
The Philippine Coast Guard earlier announced that they'll be giving away free bus services for "Juanas" on select days of March in celebration of Women's Month.
The project, which was spearheaded by the PCG's Gender and Development Center, will run from the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) to Cubao, Quezon City and vice versa.
