MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is conducting its own probe of WellMed Dialysis and Laboratory Center Corp. for allegedly defrauding the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) by paying claims of dead patients.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar yesterday said they are gathering information to build a case against owners and employees of WellMed Dialysis Center.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) was tasked to conduct the probe on WellMed Dialysis Center based in Novaliches.

Eleazar said this is in response to President Duterte’s directive to arrest the owners of the private dialysis center following reports that they faked the claims of kidney patients to PhilHealth.

Eleazar explained they first have to secure a warrant before they can make any arrest. The only way to do this is to build an airtight case against the people who might be involved in the controversy.

The QCPD will also coordinate with the appropriate state agencies in its search of evidence to file cases against the personalities behind the scam.

Eleazar vowed the brains behind the scam will be held accountable for their actions as government funds are involved and could affect police officers and soldiers in need of dialysis treatment.
