MANILA, Philippines (Update 2, 11:44 a.m.) — Twenty-two  members of the Bar applied for the post vacated by Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin, when he was appointed as head of the Judiciary.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, a member of the Judicial and Bar Council by virtue of his position, said that the panel received 22 names applying for the post.

First deliberation of the applicants would be on January 31, added Guevarra.

The justice chief stressed that the list of is merely applicants for the post, and that the JBC would deliberate to come up with the official list of contenders for the position.

Fourteen of the applicants are from the appellate court. They are:

Others who are vying for the post are Court of Tax Appeals Associate Justice Roman del Rosario, Bureau of Internal Revenue Deputy Commissioner Lanee Cui-David, former dean of the Ateneo Law School Cesar Villanueva and private lawyer Jeremy Gatdula.

SC Court Administrator Midas Marquez is also applying for the spot. Marquez is also acting as the SC spokesperson.

Bersamin, earlier this week, announced the new SC chief of Public Information Office, Brian Hisoka.

The chief justice said that Marquez would continue his duties as the SC spokesman “for a smoother transition and will closely coordinate with Hosaka.”

Bersamin’s post was declared vacant after he was appointed as the country’s top judge on Nov. 28, 2018.

He took over the top judge post after the retirement of former chief justice Teresista de Castro.
