MANILA, Philippines — Newly-appointed Bureau of Corrections Director General Nicanor Faeldon took his oath before Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Wednesday morning.

DOJ Undersecretary Mark Perete, the department’s spokesperson, said Guevarra and Faeldon discussed plans on management of BuCor during the oath-taking.

According to Perete, Guevarra identified three priorities for the new leadership of the Bureau of Corrections under the helm of former Customs chief and military man Nicanor Faeldon.

He said that the Justice secretary informed the new BuCor director general of the following priorities to be addressed in the management of the bureau:

  • Alleged problem of illegal drug trading in the New Bilibid Prison
  • Congestion and security of prisoners
  • Possibility of transferring BuCor facilities to a different locality

Perete stressed that the move to transfer facilities is not yet definite as the Justice department is still looking into the “possibility, feasibility and desirability” of transferring some of the facilities under the BuCor to a new location.

The move is to “lessen congestion and [address] security concerns,” said Perete.

The DOJ spokesperson said that Faeldon would use the remaining number of the week to go to the New Bilibid Prison. Formal turn-over of responsibilities will take place early next week.

Before moving to the BuCor, Faeldon took the helm of the Bureau of Customs in 2016. He stepped down amid the P6.4-billion shabu shipment that slipped past the agency.

Faeldon filed his resignation thrice, before Duterte accepted it in August. The president then hinted that the government “would need” Faeldon.

Four months later, the former military man was placed at the Department of National Defense as deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense. He took his oath in January 2018.

Ten months later, Faeldon was appointed as BuCor chief, taking over the post vacated by Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa who is vying for a seat at the Senate.
