MANILA, Philippines — As the country commemorates National Heroes' Day, both President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo also recognized ordinary citizens.

In his message, Duterte recognized "everyday heroes" for making sacrifices for the welfare of their families and advancing their communities.

"At a time when our unity as a people is constantly being tested, we take inspiration from their triumphs and struggles as we rise above the ills that plague our society and champion the empowerment of the poor, the marginalized and the oppressed," Duterte said.

Duterte also urged the public to emulate Filipino heroes' "selfless ways" in their daily endeavors as the country pushes for "lasting change."

Robredo, on the other hand, acknowledged modern-day heroes such as overseas Filipino workers and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

"We are deeply grateful to our overseas Filipino workers for their sacrifices — enduring far away from their home to provide a better life for their families and our country," she said in a statement.

The vice president also recognized the country's soldiers for placing their lives at risk to secure the safety of the Filipino people.

"We are among those who pray for their protection while they perform their duties," Robredo said.

Whether in the past or in the present, heroes who continue to serve the country should serve as an inspiration to very Filipino, the vice president added.

"Their example should be a reminder that we ourselves are the key to the change we seek," she concluded.
