‘Quedan’ strengthens into severe tropical storm

MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau on Thursday morning said weather disturbance Quedan has intensified into a severe tropical storm.
In a televised press briefing, Pagasa said that as of 11 a.m., Quedan was located at 1,155 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan.
The severe tropical storm entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday afternoon and was initially spotted in Virac, Catanduanes.
Quedan is packed with maximum sustained winds of up to 90 km per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph.
PAGASA advised that Quedan is expected to intensity into a typhoon within the next 36 to 48 hours and is likely to make a landfall on any part of the country.
Despite this, no tropical warning signals have been raised in the country.
Quedan is forecasted to move northwest at 21 kph and expected to move towards southern island of Japan.
“It is expected to exit PAR by Saturday,” PAGASA said.
The weather bureau said Quedan may bring light to moderate rains over the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone-affected Palawan and Mindanao until Friday.
“The eastern section of Luzon, Palawan and Mindanao will have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms while Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have isolated rains howers or thunderstorms,” the weather agency said in its advisory.
PAGASA also issued flood advisory over the Zamboanga peninsula. —Rosette Adel
