MANILA, Philippines -  From jokester to champion of single parent rights?

Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III will champion the passage of long overdue amendments to a 16-year-old law for single parents to increase benefits for them and their children.

Sotto said there is an urgent need to update Republic Act 8972 of the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000 to make it more responsive, especially since the cost of living has gone up.

The senator recently came under fire in social media after he made comments on Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo’s status as a single parent during her confirmation hearings at the Commission on Appointments.

Sotto apologized and said he might have been taken out of context as some of his children were also single parents.

Leaders of the Federation of Solo Parents Luzvimin (FSPL) who visited Sotto in his office yesterday said the bashing was unproductive and called on all concerned to move on.

FSPL president Carina Javier said Sotto’s comments were a blessing in disguise as it helped draw public attention to the plight of solo parents.
