MANILA, Philippines – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Tuesday still issued gale warnings to prevent fishing boats and small vessels from venturing into the rough seas.

The warning was issued despite the state weather bureau’s advisory that typhoon Nina (international name: Nock-Ten) was downgraded to a severe tropical storm. It is headed to the West Philippine Sea and is forecast to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility within the day.

NDRRMC said strong to gale force winds associated with the northeast monsoon enhanced Nina may still affect seaboards of  Northern Luzon including Batanes, Calayan, Babuyan Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Isabela, Ilocos Sur, La Union Pangasinan.

Fisherfolk from the western seaboard of Central Luzon ?– Zambales and Bataan were also warned.

“Fishing boats and other small sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves,” NDRRMC said in its warning.

The Philippine Coast Guard also advised small vessels not to venture into rough seas.

“‘Yung malalaki can withstand e, ang pinag-iingat natin yung mga maliliit,” PCG spokesperson Commander Armand Balilo said in a televised phone interview.

At 10 a.m., the state weather bureau PAGASA said Nina’s center was estimated at 440 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales. It has maximum sustained winds up to 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 130 kph.
