MANILA, Philippines - Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Saturday morning allayed the fears of Dabawenyos, saying the city will not be terrorized by the night market blast.
"We will not be terrorized by this heinous crime and I call on all Dabawenyos to unite and let us help each other rise from this senseless incident," Duterte said in a statement.
An explosion occurred in a crowded night market on Roxas Avenue, Davao City late Friday night. Initial reports from Buhangin police said 14 people died from the incident while 36 were injured and were brought to the nearest hospital to the site, Southern Philippines Medical Center.

According to Interior and Local Government Secretary Mike Sueno, the Abu Sayyaf group has claimed responsibility over the deadly blast. He said all concerned units remain on high alert to avoid the repeat of the incident.
As the mayor takes over the situation in Davao City, Duterte-Carpio reminded other officials to stay within the bounds of their official duties. She asked to be left in peace as she fulfills her job as the city mayor.
Duterte-Carpio then asked the citizens to be vigilant amid threats surrounding the city. She advised them to report any and all suspicious activity, no matter how insignificant it may seem.
The city mayor, who feels sorry for what happened, also extended her condolences to the victims of the night market blast. She said the city government will shoulder all the victims’ medical expenses.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of those who died last night. I would also like to reassure all of them, as well as the families of those who are injured that the City Government of Davao will assist in all their needs for hospitalization, burial, funeral and day to day expenses,” Duterte-Carpio said.
As she also calls for unity of Dabawenyos, Duterte-Carpio invited the citizens to attend the memorial slated Saturday afternoon, 4:00 p.m. at the explosion site.
“Everybody is welcome to say their prayer, lay their flowers and light a candle for those who passed,” she said."
