Airports to be fitted with bottled liquid scanners

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has initially acquired eight bottled liquid scanners for security screening in airports nationwide.

The DOTC's Office of Transportation Security (OTS) said it will be introducing the electromagnetic analyzer-3 (EMA-3) in various airports throughout the country.

The OTS said that EMA-3 is designed to check and screen sealed bottles carried by people in transit through security checkpoints to verify whether or not the liquid items can be brought inside the aircraft.

The content of the bottle having a volume capacity from 100 milliliters to 2,000 milliliters is analyzed without the need to open the container as the detection of dangerous substances is effected using non-ionizing electromagnetic fields, the OTS said.

The OTS added that in case of open containers such as cups and thermos, it will be screened through an optional external probe using disposable small plastic cups.

EMA-3 inspects a wide range of bottles with different capacity to be analyzed, such as clear or colored, plastic or glass as used in wines and champagne bottles. These materials are permeable to the energy used by the sensors.

The Defense and Protection Systems Phils Inc. won in the bidding of the project, amounting to P19.2 million for the eight sets of bottled liquid scanners.
