BINMALEY, Pangasinan, Philippines  – Former lawmaker Mark Cojuangco wants Vice President Jejomar Binay to be the presidential candidate in 2016 of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), of which his father, Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. is chairman emeritus.

Speaking at yesterday’s inauguration of the Manpower Training and Development Center, Cojuangco said as NPC chairman in Pangasinan, he believes his endorsement of Binay would have a bearing in the party’s final selection.

“I will fight for our party’s adoption of the person in front of you this morning as our candidate for president of the Philippines in 2016,” he said in Filipino.

Cojuangco said Binay has many accomplishments when he was mayor in Makati and that he is presently helping Filipinos wherever they are in the world.

“He is super industrious, not boastful, very approachable, listens before judging, listens before talking, listens before deciding and very capable,” he said.

Speaking to reporters, Binay said he is elated at the trust that NPC had shown him through Cojuangco.

The NPC knows that he had done right as mayor of Makati, he added.

An organization needs an experienced and capable leader, Binay said.

In a text message to The STAR, Cojuangco said the NPC has a process in selecting a presidential candidate.

“I do not decide for the party,” he said. “The party supports P-Noy in the House in coalition with LP. My preferences are mine.”

Speaking to reporters after the inauguration, Cojuangco said NPC has its “own identity.”

“NPC preserves its own identity so it is really an independent party from any administration,” he said.

Cojuangco said following an election, the NPC either coalesces with the administration or supports the opposition, depending on whether the party believes in the programs of the administration.
