MMDA hit for deploying rescue teams in combat uniforms

Aie Balagtas See - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Netizens have criticized the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for deploying civilian rescue teams dressed in combat camouflage to critical areas in the metropolis at the height of Typhoon Ruby’s onslaught.

The negative reactions were posted on the comments section in the MMDA’s Facebook account.

The photos showed military attired MMDA disaster personnel distributing relief goods and some in formation receiving orders “in anticipation of the effects of Typhoon Ruby.”

While many of the netizens emphasized they recognized the agency’s “noble effort” to provide service to Filipinos during disasters, some could not help but ask why the MMDA had chosen a rescue outfit that was “not visible in the dark.”

“Why did they have to be in fatigues? They’re not going to war so why make them wear camouflage? Just asking,” said Facebook user Trebor Roinuj in Filipino.

One XP Casambre lauded the MMDA’s rescue effort but chided the agency for its choice of outfit for its personnel.

“I salute the MMDA rescue effort.... Maybe you would like to rethink the rescue uniform though... You might blend in with the flotsam in the flood hindi kayo makita ng mga kailangan ng tulong (you won’t be seen by people who need your help),” said Casambre. A bright or reflectorized shirt would have been more appropriate, Casambre said.

“Please take this as constructive criticism, that in no way means to demean your noble effort,” Casambre said.
