2 killed, over 1M affected by 'Ruby'

MANILA,Philippines - Two were killed while more than a million people were affected by typhoon Ruby in several parts of the country, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Monday.

The state emergency response council reported that the official death toll from Ruby remained at two, both of whom died from hypothermia. 

In its latest situational report, the NDRRMC said that out of the 1,074, 080 individuals or 232,948 families affected by inclement weather, some 1,066,141 persons or 230,569 families are being served inside and outside various evacuation centers.

The affected persons are from Regions 4-A, 4-B, 5, 6, 7, and 8, the NDRRMC said. 

The NDRRMC added that over 2,600 passengers have been stranded in several ports affected by typhoon. 

The inclement weather also triggered several power outages in 16 provinces, including Quezon, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Albay, Masbate, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Iloilo, Antique, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte , and Southern Leyte, the NDRRMC said. 

It also said that there were also 10 roads and bridges in Regions 5 and 8 due to flooding, landslides and debris.

Meanwhile, the national government, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and various local government units have poured in a total of P47.2 million worth of assistance to regions 5, 6, 7 and 13.
