MANILA, Philippines - The Office of the Ombudsman is already investigating the alleged donations given to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima.
"The office is already probing the matter," Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales said, in reaction to a Senate committee report urging the Ombudsman to look into the allegations against Purisima.
The Ombudsman also welcomed the release of the final report of the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs.
"The investigators shall study it as soon as the report is received," she said.
The Office of the Ombudsman initiated the case build-up and lifestyle check on Purisima after an anonymous complaint charging him of ill-gotten wealth was filed on June 25.
The Office of the Deputy Ombudsman for the Military and Other Law Enforcement Offices is gathering evidence and looking into other possible leads not mentioned in the anonymous complaint.
Members of the crime watchdog Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption subsequently filed a related complaint and supplemental plunder complaint against Purisima in late September and early October.
Meanwhile, Purisima and other PNP officials are facing preliminary investigation and administrative adjudication on the cases arising from the allegedly anomalous courier service contract with Werfast Documentary Agency.
The complaints allege that Purisima and other PNP officials siphoned funds from the mandatory delivery fees paid by gun owners in securing their gun licenses, through the PNP-Werfast memorandum of agreement on courier delivery of firearms license cards.
