Palace condemns killing of Iligan broadcaster

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang condemned the killing of a radio commentator in Iligan last Thursday and is now working with authorities tasked to run after the perpetrators.

“The government does not tolerate such incidents, especially if these are media-related. We strongly condemn these kinds of incidents,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte told radio dzRB yesterday.

“That being said, we will be coordinating with the PNP (Philippine National Police) to get more details on the case,” she said.

Police reports said Fernando Solijon, a radio commentator for dxLS Love Radio, was shot dead after visiting a friend’s house in Iligan City.

The two suspects were reportedly riding a motorcycle but witnesses could not describe them because it was dark.

The 48-year old victim died on the way to a hospital.

Solijon’s acquaintances believe that his murder was work-related, noting that he has been critical of local officials.

Valte gave assurance that efforts are underway to ensure that the case would move forward expeditiously.
