Donaire’s wife saves child

MANILA, Philippines - Unmindful of her own safety and that of her unborn child, Rachel Donaire, the wife of Filipino boxing superstar Nonito Donaire Jr., jumped into the water to save a drowning child.

No other details were available as of press time but Donaire, the former world champion, said on Twitter that Rachel was taken to a hospital after the incident, which happened during the 4th of July celebrations.

“Rachel Donaire was admitted in a hospital for fetal monitoring after saving a drowning child,” said the boxer on his Twitter account with over 140,000 followers.

“Wifey admitted into ER (emergency room) for fetal monitoring. She’s full term but not due for another 17 days. Praying things are okay,” the boxer added.

Donaire, a four-division world champion, thanked everyone for their prayers.

It was a selfless act for Rachel.

Rachael is nine months pregnant, and the Donaires, who are based in the United States, are expecting their first child to be delivered in three weeks.

Donaire told sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz that one of their friends’ son disappeared in the water during a party.

Rachel, according to the boxer, “didn’t hesitate to jump in after him but injured herself in the process.”

Donaire added that his wife, who turned 31 last month, “moved so quickly it scared me.”

Messages of concern flooded Donaire’s Twitter page and people started hailing Rachel as a hero.

“Amazing what your wife did. Be very proud of her. Good luck in your future IN and OUT of the ring,” said Adam Marriott.

“On behalf of my family, I commend your better half for her heroic act. A future super mom! God bless her and your baby!” said Clark Morada.

“Your wife is amazing! Faith in humanity restored,” was the message of a certain Gunawan Aldy.

“Wow!! Rachel is a hero!!” posted American super-middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Just the other day, Rachel posted on her own Twitter account that “for no reason” she received a bouquet of flowers from Donaire.

“And rolled up in the bouquet a copy of his vows,” she said.

Rachel is a winner at heart. She is a former taekwondo champion, a former US collegiate champion, and for a time she represented the Philippines in an international competition.

Rachel, once voted among FHM’s World’s Sexiest Women, is dubbed as the “Knockout Queen.”

On this 4th of July, she certainly scored a knockout.
