MANILA, Philippines — Illumination's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is the newest box office hit of the year, breaking records globally, including the Philippines.

The sequel to 2023's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" debuted to a record-breaking $372.5 million (P22.4 billion) worldwide, making it the biggest debut of the year so far.

Nearly half of that take, $182.5 million or nearly P11 billion, came from cinemas outside North America, including the Philippines, where it raked in P12,474,229 as of press time.

The latest figure puts "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" at the same record or even beat the number of "Project Hail Mary," which held the biggest Hollywood opening weekend of 2026 in the Philippines with P29,258,184 in its first five days.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day return as the voices for brothers Mario and Luigi, now the revered heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom led by Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy).

The movie also shows how Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson) has been captured by Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie) as part of his plan to rescue and please his namesake father (Jack Black).

The brothers find themselves flying through the stars to help Peach and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) rescue Rosalina accompanied by Yoshi (Donald Glover) and meeting some familiar faces along the way.
