Matty J teases 'Britain's Got Talent' semifinals piece, future endeavors
MANILA, Philippines — Filipino singer Matty Juniosa is cooking up something spicy for the semifinal round of competition show "Britain's Got Talent."
During the audition phase, Matty received the Golden Buzzer from judge Simon Cowell after a soulful rendition of Prince's "Purple Rain."
The move automatically qualified the singer for the live semifinals with six other contestants as of writing, and he told Philstar.com that what he has prepared will surprise people.
"Even I can't believe I'm doing this next song, because I think what people know me as is the diva [who does] sassy songs or queer songs," Matty teased. "But we're going quite masculine — not that there should be a feminine, masculine thing — this is quite out of range for me. Like this isn't something I do a lot."
The singer shared during his audition that he has been working in Glasgow, Scotland as a part-time waiter. He was completing a Musical Theater degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Before "Britain's Got Talent," Matty already had plans to pursue theater both in theory and practice after finishing the program last year, though he can't divulge yet specific plans.
He acknowledged the initial struggle of having to choose between mainstream music and theater, "But I can't let go of what I learned over the last few years and sacrifice that just to be in mainstream. And I also can't just be musical theater and let go of my past of doing mainstream."
Matty admitted feeling lucky, blessed, and privileged to be able to do both aspects, especially plans to release music he has been writing for some time now.
Even now, Matty told Philstar.com, he is still trying to take the entire experience in as it has not fully sank in.
The singer beamed up sharing that Sophia Laforteza, the Filipino leader of global girl group Katseye, followed him on Instagram and even did a snippet of the viral "Gabriela" choreography.
Another individual who followed Matty was Filipino-American singer Jessica Sanchez, who similarly received the Golden Buzzer on "America's Got Talent" en route to winning the show's 20th edition last year.
"Those things that are coming every day, every time I have to pick myself back up again and just take it all in," he continued, citing plans to visit family should they come over since his packed schedule leaves any chance of returning to the Philippines uncertain.
While waiting for the semifinals to begin on April 25, Matty wants to see world's current perception of him, maybe by going to the sole Jollibee in Glasgow.
"I've put the work in already. I just want to reap what I've sown and I want to see my family. I want to get a boyfriend... No, I don't want to get a boyfriend! Distraction, no!" Matty ended with a smile.
