MQAA to hold summer workshop on Chubbuck acting technique
“Don’t sit on your pain, use it for change.” These were the words of American acting coach and creator of the Chubbuck Technique, Ivana Chubbuck.
Among Ivana’s clients are Hollywood stars Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Sylvester Stallone, Charlize Theron and Filipino acting coach and filmmaker Rahyan Carlos (“Shake, Rattle & Roll 8,” “Pamahiin,” “Ringgo: The Dog Shooter”).
Direk Rahyan, who’s the “only Filipino authorized to teach the prestigious Chubbuck Technique in the Philippines,” will lead the MQuest Artists Agency (MQAA) Summer Workshops this May for aspiring actors and industry veterans alike using the Chubbuck Technique. The participants will also have the chance to be discovered and join the MQAA Artists Registry.
As explained by direk Rahyan during a mediacon, what sets apart the Chubbuck Technique from other acting styles developed in the past is that “it teaches actors how to use their emotions not as an end result but as a way to empower as a goal.”
It is “all about using your inner work to solve, resolve and evolve, and have catharsis for both your character and yourself.”
At the mediacon, some of the mentees of direk Rahyan, namely former Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chair Liza Diño-Seguerra, Kych Minemoto, Carla Martinez, Jenny Miller, among others, have showed their support as well as shared experiences and valuable insights they’ve learned from his workshop.
Carmi Martin and Polo Ravales even demonstrated how the Chubbuck Technique works during the event.
Polo told The STAR that he was able to apply Chubbuck Technique in real life. He recalled that direk Rahyan would give a lecture on how important it is to be a good person before he would start his class.
“Direk Rahyan would focus on that first. I think that’s the difference. Because the other (workshops would teach you) kung paano lang maging magaling umiyak, magpatawa, they just focused on that. But with direk Rahyan, he would give you a lesson on how to be a good person, second na yung how to be a good actor.”
Direk Rahyan has mentored numerous award-winning actors over the past 26 years. One of the actors that he handled and became impressed with was Christian Bables who was the 2021 Best Actor at the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) for his performance in the “Big Night!” and the Best Actor at the fifth Hanoi International Film Festival for his performance in the drama flick “Signal Rock.”
Christian was direk Rahyan’s student in Scriptwriting class in La Salle. “I couldn’t make him talk. I told him, ‘Anak, manood ka kaya ng workshop ko,” the latter recalled. “He came to the workshop and he liked it. He enrolled and worked his way up from introductory, advanced then masterclass.”
Direk Rahyan also mentioned actress and former Film Development Council of the Philippines chairman Liza. “I remember the first masterclass that we did. She was one of the participants. And then every night, pinupuyat niya si Ice (Seguerra, spouse) ng mga karga nila. But I’ve seen how Liza has grown as an actor and embraced (acting) because in this technique, we used our insecurities, our flaws to win. We are not ashamed of it. That is who you are and we would use that on how to win.”
He continued citing the names of the mentees he’s proud of, including those who were present at the mediacon.
“What I always tell my new actors is to be a sponge na hindi dapat natutulog yung acting sa lifestyle of learning. You are as good as your last work,” stated direk Rahyan.
