More songs about the rainy days

This is Dodo-Me time because I just found out that music lovers do feel strongly about rain songs. Truth to tell, I have a feeling that many of them have personal themes like the ones they listen to inside their heads while watching raindrops resembling tears fall on the window pane, the pavement, the grassy lawns, or while hearing the pitter-patter on the roof. So, they were not pleased at all when I missed out on their favorites.
I wrote about rainy days and Mondays a few columns ago and I am glad that quite a lot of The STAR readers took notice of the piece. That is the reason why I got these reactions in return:
“You forgot the best rain song of all time, Purple Rain by Prince.”
“How could you miss Gary Granada’s very beautiful Saranggola sa Ulan.”
“You like the Beatles but you did not mention Rain.”
And a very hurt one. “You do not write about BTS. Only Jung Kook. Now you did not mention V who has his own rain song, Rainy Days.”
Rainy Days is the latest single by V. V is Kim Tae-hyung, the husky voiced, sweet rapper of the globally famous South Korean boy group, BTS. He recently launched his solo career with the song Love Me Again. His follow-up single is the melancholy Rainy Days, which shows off his sexy tones to advantage.
Both songs will be included in his first solo album titled Layover, which has a September release date. Armies can also look forward to another single soon, Slow Dancing. BTS might at present be in hiatus at the moment, but fans can still feast on the boys’ solo efforts like V’s Rainy Days.
Of course, after that feedback, I went in search of other rain songs, and I did find a lot that I like and that I should not have missed. I noticed that most of these are sad songs about heartbreak. Maybe this is because raindrops are usually likened to tears, which most of the time are caused by sadness or pain.
A notable exception to this is the perky No. 1 seller Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head by B.J. Thomas. It was composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and used in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which starred Paul Newman and Robert Redford. People loved its optimistic point of view, “It won’t be long/‘til happiness steps up to greet me…” that it became such a huge hit and even won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1969.
Composed and performed by folk singer Gary Granada, Saranggola sa Ulan translates into Kite in the Rain. Now who would want to fly a flimsy kite made of paper and sticks in the rain? You can’t. But that is just the message of the song. Hope springs eternal.
“Ang pag-asa’y walang hanggan/pag-ibig ay walang hadlang/at lilipad ang saranggola sa ulan.”
The lovely ballad is sad, but also wistful and certainly brings on the smiles.
Here now are those other rain songs. The heartbreaking but also rocking Purple Rain by Prince; Rain by the Beatles; Tag-araw, Tag-ulan by Hajji Alejandro; It Will Rain by Bruno Mars; Through the Rain by Mariah Carey; I Always Get Caught in the Rain by Dionne Warwick; Rain in My Heart by Frank Sinatra; Raining in my Heart by Buddy Holly; Yesterday I Heard the Rain, also by Dionne Warwick; Ulan by Rivermaya; Sukob Na by Aiza Seguerra; Buhos ng Ulan by South Border; Ulan by Juan Karlos; and many more.
And also not to forget the most enduring rain song of all and a kiddie favorite. “It’s raining, it’s pouring/the old man is snoring/he bumped his head and went to bed/and he couldn’t get up in the morning.”
And if you want to go Pinoy, you can also chant, “Umuulan, uma-araw, nanganganak ang bakulaw…”
