Sunshine Cruz has always believed that being on good terms with her ex-husband Cesar Montano is “possible” after their separation in 2013. They are co-parents to their three daughters, Angelina Isabelle, Samantha Angeline and Angel Franchesca.

“I think it’s possible naman ever since. But we just needed time,” stated Sunshine during the media conference of Unbreak My Heart. “It’s like a wound, it’s not going to heal right away. But the time will come, one day, you will wake up that everything is OK.”

“Because I see that my children are happy when they are with their Tita Kath (Angeles, current partner of Cesar), with their siblings and with Cesar. So, who am I not to be happy? My children are my life. Their happiness is my happiness as well,” she continued.

Sunshine and Cesar were both proud parents as they reunited last month to attend the graduation rites of their second daughter Sam. The veteran actor uploaded on Instagram the photos of them together.

Sunshine plays Christina Zhang in Unbreak My Heart, a historic series collaboration of GMA, ABS-CBN and Viu.

“That’s our goal,” commented Sunshine. “When it comes to our children’s milestones or birthdays, or New Year, or Christmas, if they want to be with their dad, hindi naman impossible talaga. As what I’ve said, time heals our wounds.”

“It’s been 10 years (since the separation). I think it’s about time. Kung ang sugat nga gumagaling, eh, what more kung ganyan. And kahit ano naman ang gawin natin talaga, he will always be a part of our lives, especially to my kids. And it’s a good thing and nakakatuwa because his partner Kath is very nice.”

According to Sunshine, Kath would encourage Cesar and his daughters to spend more time. “So, I think it makes a difference if we bond together. You get inspired to be a kind person and to be close with your children or with their family,” she said.

During the graduation rites, Sunshine revealed that among the things that they talked about while seated next to each other for three hours were about her ex-spouse’s bout with COVID-19 and him offering an acting project to her.

“So, we talked about things like he has a script and parang he is considering me to be part of it,” she recalled. “I told him, ‘Why not?’ And we talked about his ordeal with COVID where he was almost intubated. Topics like that. And we talked about, of course Kath, the kids, and his children with Kath.”

Sunshine doesn’t know the details of the project yet, but she is willing to do it. “Whatever it is, if my schedule permits, it’s an honor to work with Mr. Cesar Montano, who, we all know, is a great actor.”

The actress also acknowledged that fact that her daughters are all grown-up and might soon enter into a romantic relationship. “Mga dalaga na, eh, they have suitors. I was 14 years old when someone courted me,” she shared.

As a mom, she stressed the importance of guidance and open communication.

“So as long as they are open with me, our communication is open, (it’s OK). Most of all, they are honor students,” she beamed. “They are focused on their studies. On my part, guidance lang talaga.”

“It’s such a blessing for the kids, not only to me, that they have (good) relationship with their dad and they also get to talk to him. Of course, it’s different from a male’s perspective,” said Sunshine.

Speaking of love life, she just kept mum when asked if she is ready to fall in love again, “Pass. Ba-bye (laughs). Focus muna sa work.” She’d rather keep her love life private, she said. Sunshine and ex-boyfriend Macky Mathay called it quits months ago.

Meanwhile, she felt “blessed and grateful” to be part of the series Unbreak My Heart, the first collaboration of GMA Network, ABS-CBN Corp. and Viu Philippines. It is topbilled by Jodi Sta. Maria, Richard Yap, Gabbi Garcia and Joshua Garcia. It is helmed by Emmanuel Palo and Dolly Dulu and produced by Dreamscape Entertainment.

Sunshine plays Christina Zhang, the current wife of Richard’s Matt. In the trailer, Jodi’s Rose is seen in a confrontational scene with Sunshine’s character. The slap scene was just one take, revealed Sunshine. “Of course, I (had) to do it well. Nakakahiya naman to do it over and over again. Masakit na nga paulit-ulit pa ‘di ba? In everything that we do, we have to give our 100 percent.”

The last time that Sunshine worked with Jodi and Richard was in the ABS-CBN series Be Careful with My Heart.

Will she be open to do sexy films again? “Nag-Vivamax nga ako nung kelan, di ba? If the scene requires for it and basta kakayanin ko and with the consent of my kids (I might do it). But if they say no, of course, it’s important (to consider) what my children will say.”

(Unbreak My Heart airs on GMA Telebabad, Pinoy Hits, and I Heart Movies at 9:35 p.m. from Mondays to Thursdays and 11:25 p.m. on GTV. It is also available on GMA Pinoy TV and TFC. It will also stream 48 hours before its TV broadcast in the Philippines on GMANetwork.com and iWantTFC as well as in 16 territories outside of the Philippines on Viu).
