New OPM sounds for everyone to enjoy
The music keeps on coming. There is no need to wonder what would happen to the music industry in this time of fear and uncertainty. We have dedicated artists whose creative juices continue to churn out new sounds for us to enjoy. This week, we find some of them introducing their latest and, I must say, laudable efforts.
Unique Salonga, the enigmatic and hot-selling singer and songwriter, has dropped his latest single on the OC Records label. It is the electropop ballad Huwag Ka Sanang Magagalit. This is the first track out of his new full-length studio album titled Pangalan. Why is it called Pangalan or Name? He has not yet provided an answer but I am sure it will not be what we usually expect.
Fans familiar with Unique’s unconventional style are doubtless aware of his penchant for springing surprises on his listeners. I am sure that Pangalan with its all-original lineup has lots to offer. I say, prepare to be mesmerized again. Remember like you were when Unique rocked the music scene as frontman of IV of Spades with the phenomenal-selling Mundo. That one really made an impact on the listening habits of all Pinoys and ushered in the band scene.
And what about the time when Unique surpassed all expectations with his first solo outing, the album Grandma with the memorable singles Midnight Sky, Cha-ching and Sino. He can be big with or without the other Spades. So make sure you check out Huwag Ka Sanang Magagalit and then later, Pangalan.
Rafa Siguion-Reyna, scion of showbiz royalty, makes his singing debut for Viva Records with the pop-rock love song Habang Buhay Kitang Hahanapin. Rafa is grandson to the legendary Armida Siguion-Reyna and son to actor and director Carlos Siguion-Reyna and actress and writer Bibeth Orteza.
He has huge shoes to fill but Rafa has already proven his acting mettle in films, he was in the epic drama Goyo, and in theater, as one of the leads in the musical drama Ang Huling El Bimbo. He is now poised to try his luck as a singer and he has the kind of song that gives birth to heartthrobs.
After 12 years as an actor on television and in motion pictures, Jace Roque has decided to finally try his luck as a singer. My reaction to this is, what took him so long? Jace is a natural musician. His new single release is titled Forever and it is one of the most musically diverse I have ever heard.
With a mix of English and Tagalog lyrics, Forever is his fourth release. It comes after Sober, Love and Day and Night. It is mainly pop-R&B but it also has well-defined influences of EDM, hip-hop, Latin and reggae. Jace is the songwriter, arranger and producer of the track. Of course, he is also the singer.
Speaking of reggae, there is a reggae collective that is now making waves with its sophisticated island vibe. This is We Got and it has a new single, Lihim Na Pagtingin, that is just right for these balmy summer nights. Too bad, there is not much partying going on these days. The sound of We Got would have been perfect for those. But we can still enjoy listening to it.
Lihim Na Pagtingin is about friends who are secretly in love with each other. The story ends happily for both, and I also say for We Got which is off to a great start with this release. Producer is the capable Raimund Marasigan, who is the founding member of such bands as the Eraserheads, Sandwich and Pedicab.
We Got is made up of Mark dela Cruz, Makoy Quebral, Nam Reput, CJ Bernardo, Thopher Laroco, Melvin Bernardo, Tonton Otoc and John Rafael Morales.
